Tree Peonies

Tree Peonies are known as the King of Flowers in the Orient. Botanically known as Paeonia suffruticosa, these plants have been exalted as garden aristocrats for over a millennium. Native to the mountains of Bhutan, Tibet and North China are more properly classified as shrubs.

Preferring wind protection, Tree Peonies will thrive for centuries in any fertile soil with a pH of 6-7.2 that is well drained and in a sunny location, in hotter areas a little afternoon shade will prolong the bloom. Space 4'-6' apart in well worked hole at least 2'x2'x2' with about one cup raw bone meal mixed in, water good, and mulch the first year.

They are truly attractive year round. After blooming in early spring and providing beautiful foliage all summer, they finally explode in vivid fall color, leaving the woody structure for winter interest. They slowly become gracefully branched shrubs maturing from 2'-8' tall with beautifully incised leaves and breathtaking flowers-great rippling blossoms in wonderful hues. Because our Tree Peonies are on their own root (a difficult and costly, but worthwhile propagation technique) they are well-developed, grow in a shapely form, have an excellent flowering habit and will enjoy life for scores of years. We offer only three-year old or older plants (blooming size) on their own roots. They take time to develop and require several years for full growth. Tree Peonies are sure to become the family heirloom handed down from generation to generation.
